Postop Care of Abcess

Post-Operative Care After Abscess Drainage

After an abscess has been drained, proper care is essential to ensure fast healing and prevent infection from returning. Here’s what you can expect and how to look after the area:

Wound Care

  • The incision may be left open to allow drainage. Sometimes a small piece of gauze is placed inside to help the wound heal from the inside out.

  • Keep the area clean and covered with a fresh dressing. Change dressings as directed, especially if they become wet or soiled.

  • Always wash your hands before and after touching the wound.

Pain & Comfort

  • Some tenderness is normal. Over-the-counter or prescribed pain medication can help.

  • Warm compresses may ease discomfort and promote healing.

Medication

  • If antibiotics are prescribed, take the full course as directed.

  • Use any ointments or creams provided by your healthcare professional.

Watch for Warning Signs

Seek medical advice if you notice:

  • Increasing redness, swelling, or severe pain

  • Pus with a strong smell

  • Fever or feeling unwell

Recovery & Follow-Up

  • Healing usually takes 1–2 weeks, depending on the size and location of the abscess.

  • A follow-up appointment may be needed to check healing or change wound packing.
